The pressurized oil drives the cylinder piston to move in a linear motion, or in strokes. The mast is normally operated via a handle inside the cab or positioned in the area of the lift truck which houses the lift truck control components and the operator.

A swing mast is a lift truck mast which could rotate 90 degrees in one direction. The particular design allows the swing mast to work efficiently in tight aisles.
